Taking the RD Exam in 2027 or later? Your study plan needs to change, too.
On January 1, 2027, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the new 2027–2031 Registered Dietitian Examination Test Specifications and Expanded Study Outline will take effect.
Every five years, CDR updates the exam specifications to reflect the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are expected for a newly credentialed dietitian. The new exam outline reflects the increasingly broad role of today’s dietitian, with an expanded emphasis on professional practice, community and public health, health equity, leadership, and evidence-based decision-making.
What has CHANGED on the 2027 RD Exam?
The 2027–2031 RD Exam is organized into four domains:
| Domain | Percentage of Exam |
| I. Fundamentals of Dietetics Practice | 23% |
| II. Community and Public Health Nutrition | 22% |
| III. Human Nutrition and Medical Nutrition Therapy | 40% |
| IV. Food Science and Food Systems | 15% |
The largest portion of the exam is Human Nutrition and Medical Nutrition Therapy at 40%, covering areas such as human nutrition and physiology, nutrition assessment, diagnosis, planning and intervention, and monitoring and evaluation.
But don’t make the mistake of thinking the RD Exam is only a clinical nutrition test.
The new specifications give significant attention to community nutrition, public health, leadership, marketing and public relations, research applications, professional practice, and food systems. These might include concepts involving community needs assessments, nutrition programs and policies, health equity, cultural considerations, ethics, Scope and Standards of Practice, management, food science, and foodservice, and more.
The Bigger Picture: Application Matters
The updated content reinforces something RD Boot Camp has emphasized for years: knowing a definition is not the same as knowing what to do with it.
RD Exam questions are designed to evaluate the knowledge and skills required for entry-level practice. That means your preparation should go beyond memorizing lists and definitions. You need to be able to recognize what a question is asking, apply your knowledge to a situation, prioritize the appropriate action, and make sound professional decisions.
In other words, don’t just study the information. Practice using the information.
A Major New CDR Rule: The Eight-Attempt Lifetime Limit
There is another significant change future test-takers need to know.
In May 2026, CDR established a lifetime limit of eight attempts for individuals taking the RD or DTR examination. The new policy applies to candidates who establish exam eligibility on or after January 1, 2027. Candidates who established eligibility before January 1, 2027 are not subject to this new lifetime limit under the policy.
Under the previous policy, there was no lifetime limit on the number of attempts, provided candidates met the required waiting period between examinations.
This change makes having a structured preparation strategy especially important for anyone entering the examination process in 2027 or later.
CDR’s Test Bundle Voucher
CDR also offers an optional Test Bundle Voucher. For the RD Exam, candidates can purchase their initial exam attempt plus a voucher for a discounted second attempt. The Test Bundle is optional and separate from RD exam preparation. Candidates should review CDR’s current policies and fees when registering because these details can change.
What Does This Mean for Your Study Strategy?
If you’re taking the exam in 2027 or later, don’t simply take your old study plan and add a few new topics.
Instead, build your preparation around the 2027–2031 Test Specifications.
That means:
